Thursday Study Group – The Book of Joy

Sensei Morris Doshin Sullivan invites you to join him on Thursdays beginning the first week of October for discussions of The Book of Joy, by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Bishop Desmond Tutu. The book reading and practice meetings resume on October 3 and continue through December

Reading this book together, participants will explore spiritual themes that cross religious boundaries, with practices centered on developing a joyful approach to living. This will add a dimension to practice that is new to many of us. Also, many people seek a way to align their Buddhist practice with their family’s cultural traditions. The interfaith dialog between these two prominent religious figures offers such a framework.

The Book of Joy also presents the reader with a light-hearted conversation between two very down-to-earth people who, despite having dealt with enormous adversity, learned how to have joyful lives filled with humor and goodwill. While it is filled with good practical guidance, it is a fun, engaging book well suited to the holiday season.

Meetings are at 7:00 p.m. on Thursdays October 3 through December 26. There will be no meeting on Thanksgiving or Halloween. The reading load averages 20-30 pages per week. There are also meditation practices each week. You will need to purchase the book. It is a New York Times Bestseller, so used copies are abundant. A recent check of Thriftbooks showed many available for under $5.

These meetings are offered free of charge. For a schedule and Zoom access, reply to this email and copy Sensei Morris at morris.sullivan@gmail.com
